What creates a life? How is it sustained? How do we not only survive, but thrive and attempt a life worth living? These artists explore the essential elements: land, air and sea to show how their definition of comfort, connection, love and ultimately home can not be separated. But morph, shift in and out and rely on all forces of life—in order to truly breathe.
About the artists:
Adrian K. is a multi-talented artist who works with many art forms including murals, illustration, graphic design, photography and computer animation. Born in Queens and raised on Long Island, he frequently found himself in NYC, drawing inspiration from the art and culture of the city. He developed his own unique style while attending The School of Visual Arts in NYC which only increased his passion for character based illustrations and street art. Adrian K has merged his college training and life experiences into his own vibrant, precise, colorful and unique style. He is currently creating, exhibiting and installing his work all around the New York area.
Alex Kwan is a graduate of SVA and resident of New York, Alex Kwan spends her days animating and storyboarding for Titmouse Inc. on shows for DreamWorks and Disney, commercials for Adult Swim, and Donatello's for the recent "TMNT: Half Shelled Heroes" animated movie. On her nights and weekend, she cooks shallots and contemplates their life history leading up to the moment when they finally reach her dinner table as a garnish. Her other hobbies include following competitive eating celebrities, cat stunts, and trying to foster a lifestyle that enables more time to devote to both.
Aya Kakeda was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Now she draws and creates imaginative world in Brooklyn, NY. She has produced art for books, products, magazines, posters, and store installations from clients all over the world. Her work appeared in NIKE, Delta, Disney Hyperion Books, KidRobot, The New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine, Runners World, Nickelodeon, Noggin TV, Plan Sponsors Magazine, Men's Journal, Roger la Borde, Macy's, and HongKong Mega Mall. Aya Also takes her imaginary friends to trios exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout the world.
Cindy Suen is a New-York-based Illustrator, Animator, and GIF Artist from Hong Kong. Her work is cute, colorful, and whimsical. She draws lots of cats and pizzas, but likes to draw other things too!
Deodato Pangandoyon was born in the Philippines, Deodato is a New York-based artist dabbling in the world of illustration and animation. His work can be seen in networks such as Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and most recently in the AdultSwim TV show "The Venture Bros."
Marka27’s (Victor Quinonez) upbringing was no doubt integral in the development of his artistic signature. The word “marka” itself means “to write” or “to leave a mark”— which is exactly what he channels his inherent creative energy to do. Born in Mexico and raised in Dallas, Texas, his work blends ancient cultural traditions with contemporary street-art representation. He coined the term “Neo-Indigenous” to define this unique approach; both his murals and studio work highlight traditional Mexican cultural figures, garb, and symbolism. He’s also been commissioned to work with a number of prolific brands, including Levi’s, Heineken, Disney, New Balance and Kidrobot. His work is normally representative of a sacred, subtle kind of spirituality— one that is rooted in Hispanic tradition, but which can convey a sense of protection across cultures.
Michael C. Hsiung is a Los Angeles based artist. Michael C. Hsiung is a self taught artist known for his black-and-white pen and ink drawings. His work features a range of strangely rotund characters from fantastical creatures, such as centaurs and mermen to somewhat contemporary and/or old fashion bearded males often celebrating, imbibing, and rebel-rousing. He has exhibited his works in various galleries as well as done various commercial projects. He currently lives with his wife, Rachel, in LA where he continues to make art, comb his mustache, play D&D, and collect medieval weaponry.
Rose Wong is a Brooklyn-based illustrator. Her work consists of combining the organic and geometric world together – to which line work and decorative elements are predominantly used.
Stickymonger, aka Joohee Park, is a Brooklyn-based artist with an obsession to convert spaces into imaginary worlds that emerge as giant mural installations. Stickymonger’s murals are composed of black “stickers,” meticulously cut from giant sheets of vinyl and installed piece-by-piece by the artist, creating images that melt and flow together like rivers of ink cascading down the gallery’s walls. Park’s tactile and visual obsession with fluid and sticky blackness is related directly to her childhood experiences. Growing up in Korea, in a home adjacent to her family’s gas station, Park’s backyard housed six fuel-storage garages. There, the future artist would hide among the oil cans, often stepping in and playing with the dense black petroleum puddles that were ubiquitous in her world. Her subjects are visceral:darkness, prejudice, and anxiety are represented as eyes, holes and little girls, allowing the viewer to vicariously experience Stickymonger’s sardonic signification view point of human nature.
Taezoo Park is a digital artist based in Brooklyn NY whose work explores media and digital technologies which link together the ideal and real. Park pushes new artistic forms through his unique use of digital media, emphasizing the existent ‘character’ within a technology.
Scott Albrecht was born in 1983 in New Brunswick, NJ, and raised in Bethlehem Township, NJ. In 2003, he received a degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Philadelphia. Albrecht is currently based in Brooklyn, NY and a member of The Gowanus Studio Space. His work incorporates elements of woodworking, hand-drawn typography and geometric collage using vintage printed ephemera and found objects.
